Our Gippsland Hub

Our Gippsland hub connects donated food and animal-care supplies with rescuers and carers in the region. The work has grown around shared resources, relationships with local rescuers and people willing to move supplies between communities.

Our history includes a shared rescue base, food collections from Sale and support for an older donkey’s rescue. Each part depended on people contributing something useful, whether that was a space, a vehicle, donated goods or time.

Building a shared base

When Joey and our local volunteers began setting up a shared ARC and Craft Guild rescue-support base in Gippsland, they had already spent eight months building relationships with rescuers and making volunteer delivery runs.

The team was working with a 300-square-metre shed and space for several truckloads of supplies. Plans for the base included four truck bays, a medical room, an office and planning space. The aim was to share resources with rescue groups and partners, including WIRES, and have somewhere to store and organise goods before sending them where they were needed.

Supporting a donkey rescue

Joey and our local volunteers joined others supporting Donkey Shelter Tongala when it rescued Brutus, an older donkey. People from around the world contributed to the shelter’s effort, and our Gippsland team was among them.

Donkey Shelter Tongala carried out the rescue. We were one of many who helped, and were pleased to see Brutus safely with the shelter.

Food collections from Sale

During an earlier food allocation, the team worked with Narre Warren to help match requests with available food. Narre Warren had eight pallets and a large number of open requests, while Sale had 24 pallets and fewer outstanding requests for cat food. Maria offered to transfer requests for people who could make the trip to Sale.

Two days after that earlier offer, Maria confirmed that Sale’s food donations had been allocated. Coordinating between the two hubs gave rescuers another collection option and helped connect a regional stock of food with people who could use it.

On another occasion, our Sale hub offered cat Greenies, tuna mornay sachets and dry cat food. Rescuers with a large car, trailer or van were invited to request supplies and collect a pallet or more.
